JACKIE: We met at Pure. I had been coming for 2-3 years, and I wanted to expand my practice, so I looked into teacher training, and that’s where I met Matt. We were paired together to teach the class. We spent a week coming to Pure every night, practicing and really getting to know one another. MATT: We got married in October and it was important to us to make sure and invite some of our friends from Pure.
How We Connect
JACKIE: During a busy week in New York, I feel like our lives are just go, go, go. We live together, but do we really connect often enough? Nothing compares to coming to Pure and being next to him on the mat. You always leave here feeling so much better, having cleared your mental space together.
MATT: We commit to Monday and Wednesday nights together. Somebody might want to get together for dinner, but that’s when our favorite instructors are teaching, so we will never make plans. I’ll lie to my friends about it! In yoga, we’ll catch each other, smile, hold hands after class. It’s an intertwined bond.
Building Our Yoga Bodies
MATT: Yoga has taught me how to really slow down, and that time can be my biggest luxury. My workday is usually intense, good or bad. In yoga I enjoy the journey. I’m learning to do handstands, and if it takes me two years to do it, fine, I don’t have to be in a rush. I know that I’m getting better. JACKIE: To build a yoga body, you have to commit to showing up. Yoga will do the rest. The one thing that yoga has taught me is that you take everything day by day. There will always be something new to strive towards.
Jackie and Matt are full-time professionals who live on the Upper West Side.
