Why shouldn't we eat before class?
Some people may feel nauseous if they have eaten a meal 2 – 3 hours before coming to class. Other people can eat half an hour before practicing and feel fine. When to eat is a very individual thing. As you are trying to work it out, err on the side of caution.

If you stomach has food in it during practice, the postures might cause the food to pushup against your cardiac valve at the top of the stomach. In the long term, this might damage your cardiac valve.

Why is it important to drink lots of water before and after class?
Drinking water is the single most important thing you can do for your health – even if you are not practicing yoga. And if you are practicing yoga (or doing other exercise) it's even more important. Our bodies are 80% water and most of us are dehydrated already. Every cell of our body contains and relies on water to function properly.

If you are practicing Hot, Power, Ashtanga or other strong yoga practices, it is even more important to be fully hydrated before class and re-hydrate after class.

Why shouldn't we drink water during practice?
During your practice, you are working on the posture, breathing or honing your mental focus. Drinking water breaks your focus and concentration and can be distracting to the students around you. However if you are not fully hydrated before class, then you should certain take sips of water at appropriate times during the practice.

When can I eat after class?
Wait about 20 minutes to let you body return to normal, and then eat as you normally do.

Do I have to be vegetarian to practice yoga?
You don't have to do anything special or different to practice yoga. All you have to do is start practicing. Through regular practice you may feel like changing your diet, but if not – no problem!
